PART 3

PART 3 — The Truth They Buried
Sofia didn't tell anyone where she was going.
Not President Graves.
Not the federal agents.
Not even herself.
Because part of her still believed it was a trap.
The note sat folded inside her pocket.
Nathan's handwriting.
The same handwriting she hadn't seen in ten years.
The same man she had mourned.
The same man who taught her everything.
And now he was alive.
Three days later, Sofia arrived at the location.
An abandoned airfield hidden deep in the desert.
The place looked forgotten.
Broken hangars.
Cracked concrete.
Rusting fences.
Exactly the kind of place secrets came to die.
Or survive.
The setting sun painted long shadows across the runway.
Sofia stepped forward carefully.
Her instincts screamed danger.
Years of training never disappeared.
Then she heard a voice.
A familiar voice.
Older.
Rougher.
But unmistakable.
"Sophia."
Her heart stopped.
Slowly she turned.
And there he was.
Colonel Nathan Reed.
Alive.
Older.
Thinner.
A scar running across one side of his face.
But alive.
For several seconds neither moved.
Neither spoke.
Then Sofia crossed the distance between them.
And hugged him.
The emotion hit her all at once.
Ten years of grief.
Ten years of questions.
Ten years of believing he was gone.
Nathan hugged her back.
Like a father finding his daughter.
Because in many ways...
that was exactly what he was.
Finally Sofia stepped back.
"What happened?"
Nathan's expression darkened.
"The official story was a lie."
She already suspected that.
But hearing it confirmed made her stomach tighten.
Nathan led her into an abandoned hangar.
Inside sat old files.
Photographs.
Computers.
Boxes of evidence.
Evidence someone spent ten years hiding.
Then Nathan placed a photograph on the table.
Sofia immediately recognized the faces.
Project Atlas trainees.
Twenty-seven of them.
Children.
Prodigies.
Friends.
Most were officially listed as dead.
Nathan looked at her.
"They aren't dead."
The words hit like a bomb.
"What?"
Nathan nodded.
"The accident never happened."
Silence.
"The government shut Atlas down because someone wanted the program for themselves."
Sofia stared.
Trying to understand.
Nathan continued.
"A private weapons corporation."
Another silence.
"They funded politicians."
Another.
"They bought officials."
Another.
"And they wanted Atlas shooters."
Sofia felt sick.
Because she finally understood.
Atlas wasn't destroyed.
It was stolen.
Then Nathan handed her another file.
This one contained names.
Executives.
Politicians.
Military officers.
People connected to the conspiracy.
One name immediately caught her attention.
Her blood ran cold.
President Malcolm Graves.
The same man who recognized her tattoo.
The same man who seemed shocked to see her.
The same man she thought she could trust.
"No."
Nathan's face remained grim.
"He wasn't the mastermind."
A pause.
"But he helped cover it up."
Sofia sat down heavily.
Everything felt unstable.
Everything she believed was collapsing.
Then Nathan revealed the final truth.
"The reason they wanted you..."
His voice cracked slightly.
"...was because you were the best."
Silence.
"Atlas Seven wasn't just another trainee."
Nathan slid one final file across the table.
Marked CLASSIFIED.
Sofia opened it.
Inside was her evaluation report.
Perfect scores.
Perfect accuracy.
Perfect psychological resilience.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
A note written years ago.
Before everything fell apart.
She read it once.
Then again.
Because she couldn't believe it.
The note said:
If Atlas survives, Sofia Bennett will lead it.
Her hands trembled.
Because suddenly she understood.
They weren't hunting her because she knew secrets.
They were hunting her because she represented something.
Something powerful.
Something they could never control.
Then a gunshot echoed outside the hangar.
Both Sofia and Nathan froze.
Another shot followed.
Then shouting.
Vehicles.
Men.
Lots of men.
Nathan immediately looked toward the door.
His expression turned deadly serious.
Because he recognized the sound.
"They found us."
Sofia grabbed the file.
Nathan grabbed a rifle.
Then headlights flooded through the broken hangar windows.
And Sofia saw the man stepping out of the lead vehicle.
The man who supposedly wanted to help her.
President Malcolm Graves.
Holding a gun.
END OF PART 3
As armed men surrounded the airfield, Malcolm looked directly at Sofia.
Then lowered his weapon.
And shouted something that made absolutely no sense:
"Sophia, run!"
May you like
A sniper shot rang out.
And Malcolm Graves collapsed to the ground.
