PART 3

PART 3 — The Man Behind Everything
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The detectives stood frozen beside Officer Daniel Brooks.
The handcuffs remained in their hands.
Yet somehow...
Daniel looked like the calmest person in the room.
Marcus Reed felt something he rarely felt.
Unease.
Because guilty men usually panic.
They argue.
They deny.
They beg.
Daniel was doing none of those things.
Instead, he smiled.
A small smile.
The kind that suggested he knew something everyone else didn't.
"You think I'm the biggest problem in this company?"
His voice echoed through the conference room.
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked directly at Marcus.
Then laughed.
"You're investigating the wrong thief."
The room instantly became colder.
Marcus folded his arms.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel leaned back in his chair.
The detectives remained beside him.
Waiting.
Watching.
"It means someone much higher than me has been stealing from you."
Michael shook his head.
"That's impossible."
Daniel looked at him.
"No."
A pause.
"What's impossible is that none of you noticed."
Marcus stared.
Trying to determine whether this was desperation.
Or truth.
Then Daniel looked toward the security monitors.
Toward the inventory reports.
Toward the files spread across the table.
"You found missing watches."
He nodded.
"You found fake insurance claims."
Another nod.
"You found stolen inventory."
Marcus remained silent.
Daniel smiled again.
Then asked a question.
A simple question.
A dangerous question.
"Did you ever wonder where all that money went?"
Nobody answered.
Because they had.
Many times.
Millions of dollars had disappeared.
Yet investigators never found luxury homes.
Never found hidden bank accounts.
Never found lavish spending.
The money had vanished.
Completely.
Daniel slowly looked toward Michael.
The store manager.
Michael's face changed instantly.
Marcus noticed.
And suddenly...
a horrifying possibility entered his mind.
"No."
The word escaped before he realized it.
Daniel nodded.
Slowly.
Sadly.
"Yeah."
The room exploded.
Michael jumped to his feet.
"He's lying!"
Too fast.
Too loud.
Too emotional.
Marcus turned toward him.
Years of trust suddenly colliding with doubt.
Michael had worked for him for fifteen years.
Fifteen.
Marcus trusted him with everything.
The manager pointed furiously at Daniel.
"He's trying to save himself."
Daniel laughed.
A real laugh this time.
"Open the blue folder."
Silence.
Marcus looked toward the table.
A blue folder sat beneath several reports.
One he hadn't reviewed yet.
Slowly he opened it.
His heart stopped.
Wire transfers.
Dozens of them.
Shell companies.
Fake vendors.
False invoices.
Millions.
And every document carried the same authorization code.
Michael Reeves.
The room became silent.
Completely silent.
Marcus looked up.
Michael looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Terrified.
Because innocent people don't react that way.
Marcus felt sick.
Fifteen years.
Family vacations.
Holiday dinners.
Business celebrations.
Michael had been beside him through all of it.
And now...
everything was collapsing.
Michael backed away from the table.
One step.
Then another.
"Marcus..."
His voice shook.
The owner didn't answer.
For the first time since they met...
Marcus couldn't even look at him.
Then Michael made the mistake that destroyed everything.
He ran.
The conference room exploded into action.
Detectives rushed forward.
Employees screamed.
Chairs crashed onto the floor.
But Michael never reached the door.
Two detectives tackled him before he escaped.
The fight lasted less than ten seconds.
Then it was over.
Michael sat handcuffed on the floor.
Breathing hard.
Defeated.
Marcus stared at him.
Years of friendship ending in a single moment.
"Why?"
The question barely escaped.
Michael closed his eyes.
Then finally answered.
"Because I got tired of building your empire."
The confession stunned everyone.
"I watched you become richer every year."
Tears filled his eyes.
"And I convinced myself I deserved part of it."
Marcus said nothing.
Because there was nothing left to say.
The truth had finally arrived.
Hours later, the jewelry store closed early.
Police escorted Daniel and Michael away.
Customers went home.
Employees sat in stunned silence.
Marcus remained alone inside the showroom.
Standing before the same display case where everything began.
The watches reflected softly beneath the lights.
The store was quiet.
Peaceful.
Then he noticed something.
An elderly janitor sweeping near the entrance.
A man who had worked there for twenty-three years.
Marcus realized something embarrassing.
He didn't know the man's name.
Not really.
He knew every executive.
Every investor.
Every major client.
But not the man who opened the store every morning.
Marcus walked over.
Held out his hand.
"Hi."
The janitor looked surprised.
Marcus smiled.
A genuine smile.
"I'm Marcus."
The old man laughed softly.
"I know."
Marcus nodded.
Then asked:
"What's your name?"
The janitor's eyes widened.
Because in twenty-three years...
nobody had ever asked.
"My name is Samuel."
Marcus smiled.
"Nice to finally meet you, Samuel."
And for the first time in years...
Marcus understood what had really been stolen from his company.
Not watches.
Not money.
Not inventory.
Trust.
END OF PART 3
As Marcus prepared to leave, Samuel quietly handed him an old envelope.
"I found this years ago behind a storage cabinet."
Marcus frowned.
"What is it?"
Samuel looked uneasy.
Then pointed toward the handwriting.
The envelope was addressed to Marcus.
And dated twenty years earlier.
Long before the company became successful.
Long before the betrayals.
Long before everything changed.
