PART 2

PART 2 — The Investigation Nobody Saw Coming

Officer Daniel Brooks couldn't move.

The entire jewelry store felt different now.

A few moments earlier, he had been the authority in the room.

Now every eye was on him.

And none of them looked friendly.

The owner calmly adjusted his cufflinks.

Not angry.

Not shouting.

Not threatening.

Which somehow made the situation worse.

Much worse.

Daniel cleared his throat.

"There seems to be some misunderstanding."

The owner looked at him.

"No."

One word.

Calm.

Precise.

Devastating.

"There isn't."

The manager lowered the black envelope.

His hands were trembling.

Because he finally understood why the owner had arrived without warning.

Without security.

Without notice.

Without announcing himself.

He wasn't there to shop.

He was there to investigate.

The owner, Marcus Reed, slowly walked toward the center of the store.

Employees instinctively stepped aside.

Customers watched in silence.

For twenty years, Marcus had built Reed Jewelers into one of the most respected luxury brands in America.

His stores were known for trust.

Integrity.

Reputation.

Lately, however, something had changed.

Inventory reports didn't match.

Luxury watches disappeared.

Insurance claims increased.

Customer complaints quietly multiplied.

Someone inside the company was stealing.

And Marcus intended to find out who.

Daniel frowned.

"What does any of this have to do with me?"

The question sounded confident.

But not confident enough.

Marcus looked directly at him.

Then smiled.

A very small smile.

"That's what I'm here to find out."

The room fell silent.

Again.

Marcus turned toward the manager.

"Michael."

"Yes, sir."

"Bring me the security footage."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

Immediately.

The reaction lasted less than a second.

But Marcus saw it.

So did Michael.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Ten minutes later everyone gathered inside the store's private conference room.

Security monitors covered one wall.

Financial reports covered another.

Marcus sat at the head of the table.

Daniel remained standing.

Trying to appear calm.

Trying very hard.

Michael loaded the footage.

"Sir, this is from three months ago."

The video began.

Customers entered.

Employees worked.

Everything looked normal.

Then a man approached the watch display.

A rare platinum chronograph worth nearly two hundred thousand dollars.

The footage skipped ahead.

The customer left.

The watch disappeared.

Daniel folded his arms.

"Looks like theft."

Marcus didn't respond.

Instead, Michael loaded another angle.

A hidden camera angle.

One customers never saw.

This time the room went silent.

Because the customer never touched the watch.

Not once.

The footage continued.

Minutes later, an employee quietly opened the case.

Removed the watch.

Placed it into a storage pouch.

Then walked away.

Daniel frowned.

"Who is that?"

Michael didn't answer.

The employee stepped beneath brighter lighting.

His face became visible.

Gasps filled the room.

Because everyone recognized him.

Store security supervisor Kevin Ross.

The same man responsible for reporting the theft.

Marcus remained silent.

Michael loaded another video.

Then another.

Then another.

Every missing item.

Every insurance claim.

Every unexplained loss.

The same pattern.

The same people.

The same names.

Kevin Ross.

Two employees.

And one outside contact.

A police officer.

The room felt suddenly colder.

Daniel's face went pale.

Marcus noticed.

Again.

"Something wrong, Officer?"

Daniel forced a laugh.

"You're not suggesting I was involved."

Nobody laughed with him.

Because Michael had already opened the final file.

The largest theft in company history.

Over three million dollars in missing inventory.

The video loaded.

Everyone watched.

A back door opened after closing time.

A man entered.

No forced entry.

No alarm triggered.

No resistance.

The figure stepped into the light.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Because the man was him.

The footage was crystal clear.

No doubt.

No argument.

No escape.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Then Marcus finally leaned forward.

"Now I understand why you wanted me out of my own store."

Daniel looked toward the door.

Calculating.

Searching.

Panicking.

Because he suddenly realized something.

Marcus Reed hadn't come to investigate inventory.

Not really.

He already knew who was responsible.

The investigation had been finished before he arrived.

Today wasn't about gathering evidence.

It was about seeing who would expose themselves.

And Daniel had done exactly that.

Then the conference room door opened.

Two detectives stepped inside.

Badges visible.

Handcuffs ready.

The lead detective looked directly at Officer Brooks.

Then spoke six words that ended his career forever.

"Daniel Brooks, you're under arrest."

END OF PART 2

As the detectives moved toward him, Daniel suddenly laughed.

Not nervously.

Not desperately.

Confidently.

Marcus frowned.

Then Daniel looked directly at him and said:

"You think I'm the biggest problem in this company?"

The smile on his face returned.

And for the first time all day...

May you like

Marcus felt uneasy.

Because Daniel looked like a man protecting someone else.
