Part 3

PART 3 — The Woman Who Stole a Life
The library fell silent.
The adoption record trembled in his hands.
He read the signature again.
Then again.
His face slowly lost all color.
Because there was no mistake.
No possibility of misunderstanding.
The name at the bottom of the page belonged to someone he knew.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who had lived under the same roof for years.
Victoria.
The girl stared up at him.
"What is it?"
He couldn't answer.
Not immediately.
Because suddenly every lie from the past twenty-two years was beginning to fit together.
The arguments.
The disappearances.
The missing documents.
The silence.
Everything.
And standing at the center of it all...
was his wife.
Victoria was waiting in her room when the door burst open.
She stood immediately.
The look on his face told her everything.
He knew.
At least part of it.
"What happened?" she asked carefully.
He threw the adoption record onto the table.
"Explain this."
Victoria looked down.
And froze.
For the first time since he met her, she looked genuinely afraid.
Not embarrassed.
Not angry.
Afraid.
"You went through the archives?"
His jaw tightened.
"You signed Rose's adoption paperwork."
Victoria swallowed.
"It isn't what you think."
The answer came too quickly.
Too rehearsed.
Too familiar.
"No?"
His voice became dangerously calm.
"Then tell me what I should think."
Victoria opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Because there was no good explanation.
Not anymore.
Hours later, the family attorneys arrived.
Boxes were pulled from storage.
Records were reopened.
The deeper they looked...
the worse it became.
Twenty-two years earlier, Rose had secretly become pregnant.
Young.
Terrified.
Unmarried.
The scandal would have destroyed the family's reputation.
At least that's what some people believed.
The child was born in secret.
Then vanished.
Along with Rose.
Officially, Rose disappeared.
Unofficially...
someone had made sure she disappeared.
The breakthrough came just after midnight.
An old nurse was located.
Retired.
Eighty-three years old.
Living two states away.
When shown Rose's photograph, she immediately recognized her.
Then she said something that made the room go silent.
"That girl never abandoned her baby."
The man's heart stopped.
"What?"
The nurse nodded.
"She begged to keep her child."
More silence.
Then:
"Someone took the baby."
The room became still.
Completely still.
Because suddenly the story changed.
Rose had not run away.
She had been robbed.
The next morning Victoria was formally questioned.
For six hours she denied everything.
For six hours she blamed everyone else.
Then investigators found the letters.
Hidden inside a safety deposit box.
Twenty-seven letters.
Every one written by Rose.
Every one addressed to her family.
Every one intercepted.
Every one hidden.
For twenty-two years.
Victoria finally broke.
Not with tears.
With anger.
Because people tell the truth most often when they're angry.
"You don't understand!"
She slammed her hand onto the table.
"I was protecting this family!"
The investigator leaned forward.
"From what?"
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"From her."
The answer shocked everyone.
Including herself.
Because once spoken aloud...
it sounded as ugly as it truly was.
Victoria confessed.
Not everything.
But enough.
She admitted she believed Rose would inherit most of the family fortune.
She admitted she feared losing influence.
She admitted she intercepted letters.
Destroyed records.
Manipulated information.
And convinced everyone Rose abandoned them.
But there was one question she still refused to answer.
The most important question.
Where was Rose?
The answer arrived unexpectedly.
Three days later.
The girl was exploring a forgotten wing of the estate when she found an old locked room.
A room nobody used.
A room nobody talked about.
Inside she discovered dozens of boxes.
Photographs.
Diaries.
Letters.
And one final journal.
The journal belonged to Rose.
The girl's hands shook as she opened it.
The final entry was dated twenty-two years earlier.
She began reading.
Then suddenly stopped.
Her eyes widened.
"No..."
The words escaped before she could stop them.
The man rushed over.
"What happened?"
The girl slowly handed him the journal.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then widened in horror.
Because Rose had written exactly what happened the night she disappeared.
And she had written a name.
Not Victoria's.
Someone else's.
Someone nobody suspected.
Someone still alive.
Someone still inside the Ashford family.
That evening the entire family gathered in the main hall.
The journal sat on the table.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Then the man finally looked up.
Straight at the portrait hanging above the fireplace.
The portrait of the family's respected patriarch.
The man everyone admired.
The man everyone trusted.
The man who had died five years ago.
And slowly...
he realized the terrifying truth.
Victoria had hidden the crime.
But she had never started it.
The person who destroyed Rose's life...
had been his own father.
END OF PART 3
The final page of Rose's journal contained one last sentence:
"If anyone ever finds this... tell my daughter I never stopped looking for her."
Then beneath it was an address.
May you like
A place Rose had planned to return to.
A place where someone might still know what happened after she vanished.
