Part 2

PART 2 — The Pearl With the Family Seal
The hallway fell silent.
Not a single pearl moved.
Not a single person breathed.
The woman in the emerald dress stared at the floor as color drained from her face.
The young girl stood frozen.
She didn't understand.
Not completely.
All she knew was that everyone was suddenly looking at her differently.
The man holding the pearl took a slow step forward.
His hands were shaking.
Not with anger.
With disbelief.
"What was your mother's name?"
The girl wiped her tears.
"Rose."
The pearl nearly slipped from his fingers.
Rose.
The name hit him like a train.
Because Rose wasn't just a name.
Rose Ashford had disappeared twenty-two years ago.
His younger sister.
The daughter their family had searched for.
The daughter everyone eventually assumed was dead.
The daughter whose photograph still sat hidden inside his study drawer.
The daughter nobody talked about anymore.
The girl swallowed nervously.
"My mother died three years ago."
The man's chest tightened.
"How?"
"She got sick."
Her voice became smaller.
"Before she died, she gave me the necklace."
He stared at her.
Then at the family seal engraved into the pearl.
There was no mistake.
No coincidence.
No possibility of fraud.
Only three necklaces like this had ever existed.
One belonged to his grandmother.
One belonged to his mother.
One belonged to Rose.
The one now hanging around the girl's neck.
The woman in green suddenly spoke.
"Enough."
Her voice cracked.
The man slowly turned toward her.
For years she had been his wife.
For years he trusted her.
For years she controlled nearly every detail inside the estate.
Now something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
"Why are you nervous, Victoria?"
The question made her flinch.
Everyone noticed.
Including him.
"I'm not nervous."
"You broke the necklace."
"It was worthless."
His eyes narrowed.
"Worthless?"
He held up the pearl.
"The Ashford family crest is engraved into every piece."
Victoria's lips pressed together.
She had no answer.
Because she knew exactly what the necklace was.
And that frightened him even more.
Later that night, the girl sat inside the mansion's library.
Wrapped in a warm blanket.
Eating real food.
Perhaps for the first time in days.
The man sat across from her.
A leather photo album rested on his lap.
Slowly, he opened it.
The girl's eyes widened.
Every page showed the same woman.
Young.
Beautiful.
Smiling.
The same eyes.
The same smile.
The same face she saw every morning in the mirror.
"My mother..."
The man's voice broke.
"Her name was Rose Ashford."
The girl stared.
"No."
He nodded.
"Yes."
Another page turned.
Family portraits.
Birthday parties.
Christmas mornings.
A life her mother never talked about.
A family she never mentioned.
Tears filled the girl's eyes.
Because suddenly she realized something.
Her mother had been hiding.
For a very long time.
Meanwhile, across the estate...
Victoria sat alone inside her bedroom.
Her hands trembled as she dialed a number.
The call connected immediately.
A male voice answered.
"Is there a problem?"
Victoria looked toward the closed door.
Then whispered:
"She's here."
Silence.
Then:
"That's impossible."
Victoria swallowed.
"She has Rose's necklace."
The man on the other end stopped speaking.
For several seconds.
When he finally answered...
his voice had changed.
Cold.
Dangerous.
"Get rid of her."
Victoria's heart skipped.
"She knows nothing."
"She knows enough."
The line went dead.
Victoria lowered the phone slowly.
Because the nightmare she thought was buried twenty-two years ago...
had just walked back into the Ashford estate.
Back in the library, the young girl looked at the final photograph.
A family portrait.
Grandparents.
Parents.
Children.
Everyone smiling.
Except one person.
A teenage boy standing beside Rose.
The same man sitting in front of her now.
She pointed at the picture.
"You always looked at her like that."
He blinked.
"Like what?"
The girl smiled softly.
"Like she was your favorite person."
The man's eyes filled with tears.
Because she was right.
Rose had always been his favorite person.
And suddenly...
looking at the girl across the table...
felt exactly the same.
Then the butler rushed into the library.
Out of breath.
Pale.
Terrified.
"Sir..."
The man stood immediately.
"What happened?"
The butler swallowed.
Then handed him an old document discovered inside the estate archives.
The man's eyes widened as he read it.
Because it wasn't a death certificate.
It was an adoption record.
And written across the top was a name that should never have appeared there.
ROSE ASHFORD.
END OF PART 2
The adoption record was dated three weeks before Rose disappeared.

And beside her signature...
was the signature of someone still living inside the mansion.
