The Last Song for Ethan / Chapter 1 / 2

PART 2

PART 2 — The Pendant

The first note filled the hall.

Then another.

Then another.

Within seconds, the room transformed.

The laughter vanished.

The whispers died.

Every guest sat frozen.

Because the boy wasn't simply playing.

He was performing.

His fingers moved across the keyboards with impossible precision.

The massive organ answered him like a living thing.

Deep notes shook the floor.

Higher notes floated through the balconies.

People forgot to breathe.

A woman quietly began to cry.

One violinist lowered his head in disbelief.

And Maestro Alden...

stood completely motionless.

Not because of the music.

Because of the pendant.

He knew that pendant.

His wife had purchased it years ago.

A custom piece.

One of a kind.

Made for their only child.

Ethan.

The boy who vanished at age nine.

A disappearance that destroyed their family.

Alden's hands began trembling.

The music ended.

Silence.

Then the entire hall erupted into applause.

People jumped to their feet.

Some were cheering.

Others were crying.

But Alden barely heard any of it.

He walked directly to Noah.

"What is that necklace?"

The boy looked down.

"My grandmother gave it to me."

Alden swallowed hard.

"Where is she?"

Noah hesitated.

Then pointed toward Grace.

The janitor.

The woman who had spent years cleaning floors while wealthy patrons ignored her existence.

Alden stared.

His heart pounding.

Grace immediately looked away.

As if she'd been afraid of this moment for years.

Then Alden noticed something.

The eyes.

Noah had his son's eyes.

The same shape.

The same color.

The same expression.

Suddenly everything became clear.

Twenty years ago, Ethan hadn't disappeared alone.

His young wife had vanished shortly afterward.

Pregnant.

Ashamed.

Terrified.

Because Alden had rejected her.

Claimed she wasn't good enough for his family.

Grace slowly stepped forward.

Tears already running down her face.

"You don't recognize me."

Alden felt sick.

Because now he did.

The young woman he had once driven away.

Now older.

Tired.

Working as a janitor in his concert hall.

And standing beside her...

was his grandson.

END OF PART 2

Noah looked between them.

Confused.

Then Grace whispered the words that shattered Alden's world:

"Ethan never abandoned us."

May you like

She broke down crying.

"He died trying to come home."
