The Last Song for Ethan
PART 1 — The Boy Who Challenged the Maestro
The private concert hall was built for people who never expected to be told no.
Gold balconies gleamed beneath towering chandeliers.
The world's wealthiest patrons filled the velvet seats.
On stage stood the largest pipe organ in the state.
A masterpiece worth more than most homes.
Tonight, only the elite had been invited.
Then a boy in a faded brown hoodie walked through the crowd.
Nobody knew his name.
Nobody asked.
Because to them, he was invisible.
At the back of the hall, Grace dropped her mop and hurried after him.
"Noah, please."
Her voice trembled.
"Come back."
The guests turned.
Some frowned.
Others laughed.
A janitor chasing a child wasn't supposed to be part of the evening's entertainment.
But Noah kept walking.
Straight toward the stage.
Straight toward Maestro Alden Pierce.
The legendary conductor whose performances sold out years in advance.
The old maestro studied the boy carefully.
"Can I help you?"
Noah looked past him.
Past the orchestra.
Past the audience.
His eyes settled on the giant pipe organ.
Then he pointed.
"I can play that."
The room exploded with laughter.
A woman nearly spilled her champagne.
Several guests pulled out their phones.
Even some musicians smirked.
Grace wanted the floor to swallow her whole.
"Noah..."
But the boy stood perfectly still.
The laughter continued.
Until Maestro Alden raised one hand.
The room immediately fell silent.
The conductor stared at Noah.
"Do you even know what instrument that is?"
Noah nodded.
"I've practiced on one."
More laughter.
This time louder.
Because everyone could see his clothes.
His worn shoes.
The patched elbows on his hoodie.
People like him didn't practice on instruments worth millions.
The maestro narrowed his eyes.
"Where?"
Noah hesitated.
Then answered honestly.
"In the church basement."
The laughter stopped.
Not completely.
But enough.
Because something about the boy's confidence felt different.
Alden had spent fifty years judging musicians.
He knew arrogance.
He knew talent.
And suddenly...
he wasn't sure which one he was looking at.
Finally, he stepped aside.
"Fine."
A murmur spread through the audience.
The maestro pointed toward the stage.
"Show us."
Grace nearly fainted.
The crowd leaned forward.
Noah climbed the steps.
One by one.
Without fear.
Without hesitation.
The giant pipe organ towered above him.
He looked tiny in comparison.
Then he sat down.
Placed both hands on the keys.
And the entire hall held its breath.
END OF PART 1
Just before Noah touched the first note...
Maestro Alden suddenly noticed something hanging from the boy's neck.
A small silver pendant.
Old.
Worn.
Familiar.
The color drained from his face.
Because he had seen that pendant once before.
May you like
Twenty years ago.
The night his son disappeared.
