PART 3

PART 3 — The Blue Box

Nobody spoke.

Not Arthur.

Not the customers.

Not even Julian.

The rain continued tapping against the diner windows.

Leo stood frozen beside the counter.

The fear was still there.

But something had changed.

For the first time since entering the kitchen...

he wasn't running anymore.

He was fighting.

Julian slowly forced a smile.

A terrible smile.

The kind people use when they know they're losing control.

"He's confused."

His voice sounded strained now.

"His mother was very sick."

Leo immediately shook his head.

"No."

Julian's jaw tightened.

Arthur noticed it.

Every second Leo talked about the blue box...

Julian became more nervous.

That told him everything.

Then the front door opened.

A police officer stepped inside.

Followed by another.

Someone in the diner had quietly made the call.

Arthur felt relief.

Until Julian calmly pulled documents from the envelope.

The officers reviewed them.

Birth records.

Guardianship papers.

Medical records.

Everything appeared legitimate.

One officer looked at Arthur.

"Sir, legally this appears to be the child's guardian."

Leo's face went pale.

"No."

His voice cracked.

"Please don't make me go with him."

The officer hesitated.

Because the terror in Leo's eyes was impossible to ignore.

Then Leo suddenly reached into his sweater pocket.

Everyone stared.

Slowly he pulled out a small brass key.

Old.

Scratched.

Tiny enough to fit in a child's palm.

Arthur frowned.

"What's that?"

Leo looked directly at him.

"The blue box key."

Julian lunged forward.

For the first time.

His calm mask completely shattered.

"Give me that!"

The entire diner exploded into motion.

Arthur stepped between them instantly.

The officers grabbed Julian before he reached the boy.

Customers jumped from their seats.

Coffee cups crashed to the floor.

And suddenly everyone could see it.

The panic.

The desperation.

The guilt.

Julian wasn't acting like a father.

He was acting like a criminal.

One officer pinned him against the counter.

"Sir, calm down."

Julian struggled.

Only for a moment.

Then he realized he'd made a mistake.

A huge mistake.

The entire room had witnessed it.

Arthur crouched beside Leo.

"Where is the box?"

The boy swallowed hard.

Then whispered:

"My mom hid it before she died."

Silence.

"Where?"

Leo's eyes filled with tears.

"In the lighthouse."

Arthur blinked.

"The old lighthouse by the harbor?"

Leo nodded.

"My mom worked there."

The officers exchanged looks.

One immediately radioed for backup.

An hour later.

The storm had intensified.

Arthur found himself standing beside police vehicles outside the abandoned lighthouse.

Leo remained close to him.

Refusing to let go of his hand.

The brass key trembled in the boy's fingers.

Then they entered.

The lighthouse was dark.

Cold.

Dusty.

The beam above no longer worked.

Only flashlights illuminated the spiral staircase.

Leo led them upward.

One floor.

Two floors.

Three.

Finally they reached a small maintenance room.

The boy pointed toward a loose wooden panel.

"There."

An officer removed it.

Everyone held their breath.

Behind the panel sat a blue metal box.

Exactly as Leo described.

The brass key fit perfectly.

The lock clicked open.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

USB drives.

Bank records.

And one sealed envelope.

Addressed directly to:

POLICE

The lead detective opened it.

His expression changed immediately.

Then changed again.

And again.

Until the color completely drained from his face.

Arthur's stomach tightened.

"What is it?"

The detective slowly looked up.

Then toward Julian.

Who was standing in handcuffs near the doorway.

Terrified.

Absolutely terrified.

The detective's voice became very quiet.

"Leo's mother wasn't sick."

Nobody moved.

The detective continued.

"She was poisoned."

The lighthouse fell silent.

Even the wind seemed to stop.

Julian closed his eyes.

Because the blue box had finally revealed the truth.

END OF PART 3

Inside the envelope was a signed statement from Leo's mother.

And at the bottom of the page...

she had written one final sentence:

"If anything happens to me, Julian Mercer is responsible."

May you like

Julian's knees nearly gave out.

Because the evidence inside the blue box was only the beginning.
