PART 2

PART 2 — The Man With The Papers

The diner fell silent.

Even the coffee machine seemed quieter.

Julian didn't move.

He didn't argue.

He didn't raise his voice.

Instead, he slowly reached inside his trench coat.

Arthur's muscles tensed immediately.

Several customers stood from their booths.

Leo grabbed the back of Arthur's apron.

Then Julian pulled out a thick envelope.

Not a weapon.

Documents.

He placed them carefully on the counter.

Birth certificates.

School records.

Medical forms.

All bearing Leo's name.

And Julian's.

Arthur frowned.

Julian finally spoke.

"I told you."

His voice remained calm.

Dangerously calm.

"He's my son."

Leo immediately shook his head.

"No!"

The fear in his voice echoed through the diner.

Arthur looked down at the papers.

Everything appeared legitimate.

Every signature.

Every seal.

Every document.

The customers exchanged nervous glances.

Because suddenly the situation wasn't so simple anymore.

Julian pointed toward Leo.

"His mother died three months ago."

Leo began crying.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

The kind of crying that comes from a wound too deep for tears.

Arthur felt his stomach tighten.

Because the pain on the boy's face was real.

Very real.

Julian continued.

"I've been trying to bring him home ever since."

Arthur looked at Leo.

"Is that true?"

Leo didn't answer.

He just stared at the floor.

Silence.

Then Arthur noticed something strange.

The boy's hands.

They were trembling.

Not when Julian spoke.

But whenever Julian took a step closer.

Like an animal reacting to a predator.

Arthur had seen fear before.

He'd spent thirty years working late-night diners.

He knew the difference between a child throwing a tantrum...

and a child terrified for his life.

Julian reached into the envelope again.

This time he pulled out a photograph.

A family picture.

Julian.

A woman.

And Leo.

The customers began whispering.

Everything seemed to support Julian's story.

Everything except Leo.

Then the boy suddenly spoke.

His voice barely audible.

"Ask him where my mom hid the blue box."

Julian froze.

Only for a second.

But Arthur saw it.

A tiny hesitation.

Gone almost instantly.

"What blue box?"

Julian replied.

Leo looked up.

For the first time, there was anger in his eyes.

Not fear.

Anger.

"Exactly."

The diner went silent again.

Julian's expression hardened.

The calm mask cracked.

Just a little.

But enough.

Then Leo whispered the words that changed everything.

"My mom said if anything happened to her..."

He swallowed hard.

"...the blue box would prove who really killed her."

Arthur felt the blood drain from his face.

Several customers gasped.

Julian stopped breathing.

For one terrifying moment.

And Arthur suddenly realized something.

This wasn't a custody dispute.

This wasn't a runaway child.

This was something far darker.

Something that began before Leo ever walked into the diner.

END OF PART 2

Julian slowly turned toward the door.

Then toward Leo.

And for the first time...

Arthur saw genuine panic in the man's eyes.

May you like

Because whatever was inside that blue box...

Julian clearly didn't want anyone finding it.
