PART 3

Part 3 – The Mother Everyone Thought Was Gone
The room fell silent.
Michael stared at the social worker.
"What did you just say?"
She looked again at the faded missing-person report.
"I'm not completely certain."
"But three weeks ago, I volunteered at a rehabilitation hospital outside the city."
"There was a woman there."
"She had no identification."
"No family had ever come to claim her."
Michael felt his pulse quicken.
"What happened to her?"
The social worker sighed.
"She'd been struck by a delivery truck six months ago."
"The driver fled."
"She survived..."
"...but suffered a serious head injury."
"She couldn't remember her name."
Lily covered her mouth.
"No..."
The social worker knelt beside her.
"The doctors said she remembered only one thing."
Lily whispered,
"What?"
The woman smiled sadly.
"Every morning..."
"She asked if her little girl had eaten."
The room dissolved into tears.
The elderly veteran lowered his head.
Michael turned toward Lily.
"Would you like to meet her?"
Lily didn't answer.
She simply nodded over and over, tears streaming down her face.
An hour later...
The hospital room was quiet.
A woman sat by the window.
Her hair had been cut short after surgery.
A thin scar stretched across one side of her forehead.
She stared outside without expression.
The nurse gently touched her shoulder.
"You have visitors."
The woman slowly turned.
Lily stepped inside.
Her small hands trembled.
She whispered the word she had repeated every night before falling asleep.
"Mom..."
The woman's eyes searched the little girl's face.
For several heartbreaking seconds...
Nothing happened.
Lily's shoulders slowly fell.
She looked down at the floor.
"I knew..."
she whispered.
"You wouldn't remember me."
She turned to leave.
Then...
A quiet voice stopped her.
"Lily..."
The little girl froze.
Slowly...
She turned around.
The woman was crying.
"I don't remember everything..."
She pressed a trembling hand against her heart.
"But..."
"I remember loving you."
Lily ran across the room.
Mother and daughter collapsed into each other's arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
Doctors quietly stepped outside.
Some wiped away tears.
Michael stood silently near the doorway.
For the first time since meeting Lily...
He smiled.
The elderly veteran looked toward him.
"You didn't just bring food."
"You brought her family back."
Michael shook his head.
"No."
"Lily did."
"She never stopped believing her mother would come home."
Just then...
One of the doctors approached with a folder.
"Mr. Dawson..."
he said quietly.
"There's something else."
Michael frowned.
"What is it?"
The doctor opened the medical file.
"The woman has a rare blood disorder."
"She'll recover her memory..."
"But without an urgent operation..."
"...she may not survive the year."
The joy inside the room suddenly gave way to a new fear.
Lily looked up at Michael.
Her eyes filled with panic.
May you like
"Please..."
"Don't let me lose my mom again."
