PART 2

Part 2 – The Promise She Refused to Break

Michael stood frozen in the doorway.

"...Her mother disappeared?"

The elderly veteran slowly nodded.

The room remained silent except for the sound of children quietly eating.

"Six months ago," the old man said.

"She left one morning looking for work."

"She never came back."

Michael looked at the little girl.

"Lily..."

he said softly.

"Is that true?"

She lowered her eyes.

For a moment, she didn't answer.

Then she quietly nodded.

"Mom told me to take care of everyone until she came home."

Michael's chest tightened.

"You've been living here all this time?"

Again, she nodded.

The youngest boy leaned against Lily's shoulder.

"She finds food for us."

"She gives us her blanket when it's cold."

"Sometimes she tells us she's already eaten..."

"So we won't feel bad."

Michael looked at the paper bag.

Only a few crumbs remained.

Lily carefully gathered them into her hand.

Before she could eat them...

She noticed the elderly veteran coughing.

Without hesitation...

She placed the last crumbs into his hands instead.

"You need them more."

The old man tried to refuse.

"No, sweetheart."

"You haven't eaten all day."

Lily smiled.

"I'll be okay."

Her stomach growled loudly.

The room fell silent.

Michael had heard enough.

He stepped inside.

The children immediately became frightened.

Lily quickly stood in front of them.

"Please..."

she pleaded.

"They didn't steal anything."

"If someone has to leave..."

"I'll go."

Michael stared at her.

Even now...

She wasn't protecting herself.

She was protecting everyone else.

He slowly knelt in front of her.

"No one is leaving."

Lily looked confused.

"You... you're not angry?"

Michael gently shook his head.

"I'm ashamed."

She frowned.

"Why?"

"Because I almost walked away today."

Tears filled his eyes.

"I thought I was helping one hungry little girl."

"I didn't realize..."

"...there was an entire family hiding under this bridge."

The elderly veteran looked at Michael carefully.

"Most people pretend they don't see us."

Michael nodded.

"I know."

"But I'm seeing you now."

He pulled out his phone.

Lily's face instantly turned pale.

"Please don't call the police."

"They'll separate us."

Michael quietly put the phone away.

"I'm not calling the police."

"Then..."

"Who?"

He smiled gently.

"The only people who should've been here a long time ago."

An hour later...

Two vans arrived beneath the bridge.

Not police cars.

Not government vehicles.

Doctors.

Social workers.

Volunteers carrying warm blankets, clean clothes, hot meals, and medical supplies.

The children stared in disbelief.

Lily instinctively stepped backward.

She had learned that help often came with conditions.

Michael noticed.

He walked over and crouched beside her.

"I made you a promise."

"No one is taking your family away."

"They'll stay together."

The little girl finally let herself cry.

For the first time in months...

She wasn't crying because she was hungry.

She was crying because someone had finally believed her.

As the doctors examined the children, one social worker approached Michael.

Her expression suddenly changed.

"Mr. Dawson..."

She held up an old missing-person report.

The faded photograph showed a smiling young woman.

Lily's mother.

The social worker looked at Michael with disbelief.

"I've seen this woman before."

Michael's heart skipped a beat.

"You have?"

She nodded slowly.

May you like

"I think..."

"...she's still alive."
