Chapter 1

PART 2 — The Daughter They Tried to Erase

The banquet hall erupted into whispers.

Guests rose from their seats.

Security began moving toward the girl.

Questions flew across the room.

But Eleanor Whitmore heard none of them.

Her eyes remained fixed on the small crescent-shaped birthmark beneath the girl's sleeve.

The same birthmark Amelia had carried.

The same birthmark Eleanor herself carried.

A family mark.

Rare.

Impossible to fake.

Eleanor's hands trembled.

"No..."

The word barely escaped her lips.

The girl stood perfectly still.

She looked frightened.

But she didn't run.

Because she hadn't come all this way to run.

She had come for answers.

"What's your name, sweetheart?"

Eleanor asked softly.

The girl's voice shook.

"Clara."

Eleanor repeated it quietly.

"Clara."

The name felt unfamiliar.

Yet somehow important.

Security finally arrived beside the table.

"Mrs. Whitmore, should we remove her?"

The entire room held its breath.

Eleanor slowly turned.

Her expression became ice cold.

"Touch her."

A pause.

"And you'll never work for this family again."

The guards immediately stepped back.

Nobody argued.

Because everyone knew that tone.

Eleanor only used it when she was absolutely serious.

Then she turned back to Clara.

"Sit with me."

The room gasped.

Not at another table.

Not somewhere private.

At the head table.

Beside Eleanor Whitmore herself.

Several members of the Whitmore family looked horrified.

Especially Charles Whitmore.

Amelia's older brother.

His smile disappeared instantly.

And Eleanor noticed.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Clara slowly sat down.

Her hands remained folded in her lap.

She looked tiny among the wealthy guests.

Yet somehow she seemed stronger than everyone in the room.

Because she carried the truth.

Eleanor picked up the pocket watch again.

"Tell me about your mother."

Clara swallowed.

"My mom's name is Amelia."

Several guests exchanged shocked looks.

Charles suddenly stood.

"This is ridiculous."

Every head turned.

"Amelia died twenty-five years ago."

His voice sounded too sharp.

Too defensive.

Clara looked at him.

Then quietly reached into her coat.

And removed a photograph.

A recent photograph.

She slid it across the table.

The room froze.

Because the woman in the picture was clearly Amelia.

Older.

Thinner.

Tired.

But unmistakably Amelia.

Eleanor nearly stopped breathing.

The photograph had been taken recently.

Very recently.

There was no doubt.

Amelia was alive.

Charles went pale.

Completely pale.

Eleanor noticed immediately.

"Charles."

Her voice became dangerous.

"Why do you look frightened?"

Silence.

Too much silence.

Charles laughed nervously.

"I'm not frightened."

But his hands were shaking.

And Eleanor saw that too.

Years of business.

Years of leadership.

Years of reading people.

She knew exactly what fear looked like.

And Charles was terrified.

Then Clara spoke again.

"My mom said if anything happened to her..."

She stopped.

Trying not to cry.

Then continued.

"...I should bring you the watch."

Eleanor's heart tightened.

"What happened to her?"

The little girl lowered her head.

"She's sick."

Silence.

"Very sick."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Twenty-five years.

Twenty-five years stolen.

Then Clara whispered the sentence that changed everything.

"Mom said somebody spent years making sure you never found her."

The room became completely silent.

Eleanor slowly turned toward Charles.

Because suddenly a memory surfaced.

Twenty-five years ago.

The day Amelia disappeared.

Charles had been the last person to see her.

And for the first time in a quarter century...

Eleanor wondered if her daughter had never disappeared at all.

Maybe someone had made her disappear.

Then a waiter rushed into the hall.

Breathing hard.

Holding a phone.

"Mrs. Whitmore."

Eleanor looked up.

The waiter's face was white.

"What is it?"

He handed her the phone.

A live video call.

The image loaded.

And Eleanor dropped the pocket watch.

Because staring back at her from a hospital bed...

was Amelia.

Alive.

Crying.

And looking directly at her.

END OF PART 2

As the banquet hall watched in stunned silence, Amelia whispered into the camera:

May you like

"Mom... don't trust Charles."

Then the screen suddenly went black.
