PART 3

PART 3 — THE LETTER HIS FATHER NEVER WANTED HIM TO READ

No one in the cafeteria moved.

The sealed envelope rested in Ethan's trembling hands.

Across the front, written in his father's familiar handwriting, were seven words that seemed to stop time itself.

For Ethan... when he chooses mercy.

Ethan stared at the handwriting.

His throat tightened.

He hadn't seen his father's writing in four years.

For a moment...

He wasn't standing in a crowded school cafeteria anymore.

He was twelve years old again.

Watching his father help an elderly neighbor carry groceries.

Watching him stop to fix a stranger's flat tire.

Watching him tell Ethan the one lesson he repeated more than any other.

"The strongest person in the room is the one who never has to prove it."

His father had lived that belief.

And he had died protecting complete strangers.

At least...

That was the story Ethan had always believed.

Laura Bennett nodded gently.

"You should open it."

With careful hands, Ethan broke the old wax seal.

Inside were three things.

A handwritten letter.

A small silver key.

And a worn USB flash drive marked with a faded date.

March 18.

Coach Reynolds looked at the date.

His face changed.

"That was..."

Laura finished quietly.

"The day before your father died."

The cafeteria became silent once again.

Ethan unfolded the letter.

The paper had yellowed slightly with age.

The first line made his eyes fill with tears.

My son...

If you're reading this, then you kept your promise.

You became stronger than I ever was.

Ethan continued reading.

People will tell you I died because I was brave.

That isn't the whole truth.

His breathing slowed.

I wasn't protecting strangers by accident.

I was trying to stop something that had already taken innocent lives.

A murmur spread across the cafeteria.

Jake quietly stepped closer.

Without realizing it.

Laura spoke softly.

"Ethan..."

"Read the next page."

He turned it over.

His father's handwriting became more hurried.

The robbery was staged.

The words hit Ethan like a punch.

He looked up.

"What?"

Laura nodded.

"It's true."

The room remained perfectly still.

Ethan looked back down.

The men weren't after money.

They were after the evidence I was carrying.

Coach Reynolds closed his eyes.

"So that's why..."

Laura nodded.

"He never told anyone."

The principal frowned.

"What evidence?"

Laura carefully picked up the old USB drive.

"We believe the answer is here."

She handed it to the school's technology director, who had arrived moments earlier.

Within minutes...

The damaged laptop was connected to a projector in the cafeteria.

The old USB drive loaded.

One folder appeared.

BROOKS INVESTIGATION

Another folder.

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME

No one spoke.

Laura opened the second folder.

A video began.

Ethan's father appeared on the screen.

He looked tired.

Older than Ethan remembered.

But when he smiled...

It was exactly the smile Ethan had missed for four long years.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then I wasn't able to come home."

Ethan lowered his head.

The cafeteria had become so quiet that even the teachers stood frozen.

His father continued.

"Ethan..."

"I know you'll want revenge."

"So listen carefully."

He leaned closer to the camera.

"The people responsible..."

"...aren't the men who attacked me."

Everyone frowned.

"What?"

His father continued.

"They were hired."

"The real person responsible..."

"...never touched a weapon."

Jake whispered,

"What does that mean?"

Laura answered quietly.

"It means someone else ordered everything."

The video continued.

"I worked as an accountant for eight years."

"I discovered millions of dollars disappearing from public education grants."

The teachers exchanged shocked glances.

His father clicked a remote.

Financial records appeared beside him.

"Someone was stealing money meant for schools."

"For libraries."

"For student technology programs."

Ethan's damaged laptop suddenly felt different.

His father looked directly into the camera.

"I collected enough evidence to expose them."

"But they found out."

He smiled sadly.

"I knew they might silence me."

"So I made copies."

Laura quietly whispered,

"We found every copy."

Then...

His father's expression changed.

"If you're seeing this at school..."

"...look around."

Ethan frowned.

"Look around?"

The man on the screen nodded.

"Because one person in that building already knows my name."

The cafeteria instantly became tense.

Every student looked around.

Teachers looked at one another.

Who?

Coach Reynolds frowned.

"He couldn't mean..."

Laura suddenly stood.

"The personnel file."

She hurried toward the principal.

"Show me the employment records."

Within seconds...

The principal opened the staff database.

Laura searched one name.

Nothing.

Another.

Nothing.

Then she stopped.

One employee file had been created only three months earlier.

Temporary cafeteria contractor.

Background information incomplete.

References missing.

Laura's face turned pale.

"Where is Mr. Collins?"

The cafeteria manager looked confused.

"He was serving lunch twenty minutes ago."

Everyone turned toward the serving counter.

Empty.

The back kitchen door stood slightly open.

One tray still sat on the counter.

Warm food untouched.

Laura immediately spoke into her radio.

"Security."

"Lock every exit."

"Now."

Students began whispering.

Jake slowly looked toward Ethan.

"I..."

He hesitated.

"I thought you were just some quiet kid."

Ethan looked back at him.

"I wanted to be."

Jake lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

For the first time in years...

The apology sounded genuine.

Ethan nodded once.

"I know."

Just then...

One security officer ran into the cafeteria, breathing hard.

"We found him."

Laura turned.

"Where?"

The officer swallowed.

"He didn't leave."

"He went into the old storage wing beneath the auditorium."

Laura frowned.

"The basement?"

The officer nodded.

"He wasn't alone."

Everyone waited.

The officer finished quietly.

"We also found..."

"...your father's missing evidence case."

Ethan's heartbeat stopped.

The metal briefcase his father had supposedly lost during the robbery...

Had been hidden beneath his own school for four years.

Laura slowly looked at Ethan.

"I think..."

May you like

"...this is where the real story begins."

To be continued...
