PART 2

PART 2 — The Secret Caroline Never Told
For several seconds nobody moved.
The city seemed to disappear.
Only the three of them remained.
Michael.
Caroline.
And the little girl standing between them.
Lily looked at her mother.
"Mom?"
Caroline's eyes filled with panic.
"Get behind me."
The request shocked Michael.
She wasn't acting angry.
She was acting afraid.
Afraid of him.
Or afraid for him.
"Caroline," Michael said softly.
"What happened?"
Tears instantly appeared in her eyes.
"I thought you were safe."
Michael frowned.
"Safe from what?"
Caroline looked around nervously.
Then she finally spoke.
Eight years earlier, Michael had unknowingly uncovered financial crimes committed by powerful businessmen connected to a development company.
Before federal investigators could act, those men learned Michael knew too much.
Threats followed.
Warnings.
Intimidation.
Then Caroline was approached.
They gave her a choice.
Leave Michael.
Disappear.
Or watch him become a target.
She chose sacrifice.
Not because she stopped loving him.
Because she loved him too much.
Michael stood speechless.
Every year of pain suddenly made sense.
Every unanswered question.
Every sleepless night.
Then his gaze shifted to Lily.
The little girl.
The same brown eyes.
The same smile.
The same stubborn expression he saw in the mirror every morning.
A terrifying realization hit him.
He looked at Caroline.
Then whispered:
"How old is she?"
Caroline closed her eyes.
The answer told him everything.
"Eight."
Michael's knees nearly gave out.
He stared at Lily.
His daughter.
His child.
The daughter he never knew existed.
And Lily stared back.
Confused.
"Mom..."
May you like
Her voice trembled.
"Who is he?"
