PART 2

PART 2 — The Child They Couldn't Let Live
The front door exploded inward.
Rain and splintered wood flew across the station floor.
The baby screamed.
The little girl wrapped both arms around the infant and dropped behind a table.
Firefighters rushed forward instinctively.
Not because they understood what was happening.
Because protecting people was what they did.
Daniel grabbed Ray's arm.
"We have to leave."
Ray stared at him.
"Not until you tell me who they are."
Daniel looked toward the shattered doorway.
Dark-uniformed men were already entering.
Professional.
Disciplined.
Armed.
"The people who buried us."
The room froze.
Then one of the men stepped forward.
"Daniel Brooks."
His voice echoed through the station.
"Hand over the child."
Not the baby.
The child.
Daniel's face turned white.
Because they weren't talking about the little girl.
They were talking about the newborn.
Ray noticed it immediately.
"Why her?"
Daniel hesitated.
Then he finally told the truth.
Three years earlier, after surviving the warehouse collapse, he discovered something hidden beneath the mountain.
Not a tunnel.
An underground facility.
Secret.
Massive.
Illegal.
Families had been imprisoned there for years.
People nobody would miss.
Runaways.
Homeless mothers.
Undocumented workers.
Human beings erased from official records.
Daniel spent three years helping them survive.
Helping them escape.
One family included a pregnant woman.
The baby she carried was born underground.
The newborn now crying in the little girl's arms.
Ray looked at the infant.
Then at Daniel.
"What makes her so important?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Because her mother documented everything."
Silence.
"Videos. Names. Financial records."
The little girl reached into the firefighter jacket.
And removed a flash drive.
Everyone froze.
Daniel closed his eyes.
"There it is."
The evidence.
The reason people were dying.
The reason he had been declared dead.
The reason armed men had come tonight.
Outside, more vehicles arrived.
The station was surrounded.
Then the leader smiled.
A cold smile.
"You should have stayed buried, firefighter."
Ray's jaw tightened.
And for the first time that night...
every firefighter in the station chose a side.
Not because they knew the whole story.
Because they knew what was right.
One by one they stepped forward.
Standing between the child and the armed men.
The leader's smile disappeared.
Then Ray spoke.
"You're not taking either of those kids."
END OF PART 2
The armed man slowly reached into his coat.
Then pulled out a badge.
Federal credentials.
Official.
May you like
Real.
And suddenly nobody knew who the good guys were anymore.
