PART 2

PART 2 — The Fire at Saint Mary's

For one second, nobody moved.

The television above the reception desk continued broadcasting the same horrifying images.

Flames.

Smoke.

Emergency vehicles.

Patients being evacuated.

Chaos.

Richard stared at the screen.

His face drained of color.

Saint Mary's Hospital.

The hospital printed on Emily's bracelet.

The hospital where she was supposed to be waiting.

The hospital that was now on fire.

"Where is she?"

Richard dropped to one knee in front of the boy.

His voice wasn't calm anymore.

It wasn't controlled.

It was desperate.

The child flinched.

Then pointed toward the television.

"That's where she was."

Richard's stomach twisted.

"When did you leave her?"

The boy looked down.

"This morning."

Vanessa covered her mouth.

"Oh God..."

Five minutes later, a convoy of black SUVs raced through the city.

Police escorts cleared intersections.

Sirens echoed between buildings.

Inside the lead vehicle, Richard gripped the steering wheel.

The hospital bracelet rested on the passenger seat.

Beside it sat the old photograph.

Two pieces of a life he thought was gone forever.

Now both felt fragile.

Like they might disappear again.

The boy sat silently in the back.

His name, they had learned, was Jordan.

Ten years old.

Quiet.

Polite.

Terrified.

He hadn't stopped clutching the photograph.

Not once.

Vanessa turned toward him gently.

"Jordan?"

The boy looked up.

"When did your mother tell you about Richard?"

Jordan hesitated.

Then answered.

"She talked about him every birthday."

Richard looked up in the rearview mirror.

Jordan continued.

"She always said he would come if he knew."

The words shattered something inside Richard.

Because Jordan believed it.

Emily believed it.

The only person who didn't know...

was him.

By the time they reached Saint Mary's, smoke still lingered in the air.

Firefighters covered the entrance.

Ambulances filled the parking lot.

Families cried.

Doctors rushed everywhere.

The scene looked like a war zone.

Richard jumped from the SUV before it stopped moving.

"Emily Hayes."

He grabbed the nearest nurse.

"Where is Emily Hayes?"

The exhausted nurse searched her tablet.

Then froze.

Richard's heart stopped.

"What?"

The nurse swallowed.

"Room 417."

"Take me there."

The nurse didn't move.

Richard felt panic rising.

"Where is she?"

The nurse looked away.

"She isn't in her room."

Everything went silent.

Not outside.

Inside Richard's head.

The noise disappeared.

The firefighters.

The sirens.

The shouting.

Gone.

Only one thought remained.

Not again.

Jordan burst into tears.

"No."

The boy shook his head violently.

"No, no, no."

Vanessa immediately pulled him into her arms.

But Jordan kept crying.

"She promised she'd wait."

Richard couldn't breathe.

For twenty years he searched for Emily.

Now he might have found her only to lose her again.

Then a firefighter approached.

"Are you family?"

Richard spun around.

"Yes."

The firefighter looked at the photograph in his hand.

Then at Jordan.

Recognition flashed across his face.

"I've seen them."

Richard froze.

"What?"

The firefighter pointed toward the emergency triage tents.

"The woman from that photo."

Jordan's eyes widened.

"Mom?"

The firefighter nodded.

"She was evacuated before the fire spread."

Hope exploded through the group.

"Where is she now?"

The firefighter frowned.

"That's the strange part."

Richard's stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?"

The firefighter reached into his pocket.

Then pulled out a folded envelope.

"She left this."

The handwriting on the front was unmistakable.

Emily's.

Richard knew it instantly.

Even after twenty years.

The envelope read:

For Tiny.

His hands shook.

Jordan stared.

Vanessa started crying again.

Because suddenly everyone understood.

Emily knew something.

Something important.

Something she didn't trust the hospital to protect.

Richard slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Only one sentence.

Just seven words.

The words made his blood run cold.

"Don't trust the man with the ring."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then Richard remembered something.

A detail.

A memory.

A ring.

A family ring.

One worn by a man connected to the night Emily disappeared twenty years ago.

A man everyone believed was dead.

Before Richard could speak, another voice called from behind him.

"Richard?"

Every muscle in his body froze.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

He turned around.

A woman stood at the edge of the emergency tents.

Thin.

Weak.

Wrapped in a hospital blanket.

Tears streaming down her face.

Twenty years older.

But unmistakable.

Emily.

END OF PART 2

Jordan screamed:

"Mom!"

And began running toward her.

But at that exact moment, Richard noticed something terrifying.

Standing behind Emily...

watching her...

May you like

was a man wearing a gold family ring.

The same ring mentioned in the letter.
