PART 3

PART 3 — The Truth Jonathan Never Saw

The study remained silent long after the tape ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The only sound came from the grandfather clock in the corner.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Each second felt heavier than the last.

Jonathan Blackwell stood beside his desk.

Frozen.

For twenty years he had believed Claire abandoned him.

For twenty years he had carried anger where love should have been.

For twenty years he had buried his daughter while she was still alive.

And the man responsible had been standing beside him the entire time.

Richard looked toward the door.

Calculating.

Searching for a way out.

A lie.

An excuse.

Anything.

But there was nowhere left to run.

"Where is she?"

Jonathan repeated.

His voice was calm.

Dangerously calm.

Richard knew that tone.

It was the tone Jonathan used before destroying competitors.

Before firing executives.

Before ending careers.

The tone that meant mercy had already left the room.

Richard swallowed.

"I don't know."

The lie sounded weak.

Pathetic.

Even he heard it.

Jonathan stepped forward.

"You intercepted her letters."

Silence.

"You blocked her calls."

Silence.

"You threatened her."

Silence.

"You stole twenty years from my daughter."

Richard lowered his eyes.

For the first time in his life...

he looked guilty.

Then Noah spoke.

Quietly.

"He's lying."

Every head turned.

The boy reached into his backpack again.

The same backpack he had carried all the way to the Blackwell estate.

The same backpack Claire had packed herself.

Inside was a small notebook.

Its cover was worn.

Its pages bent.

Noah handed it to Jonathan.

"My mom wrote everything down."

Jonathan opened it carefully.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Claire.

Page after page documented years of fear.

Years of hiding.

Years of surviving.

Every threat.

Every warning.

Every attempt to contact her father.

Everything.

Then Jonathan reached the final entry.

The most recent one.

Written only two weeks earlier.

His hands began shaking.

If you're reading this, Richard probably told another lie.

If he says he doesn't know where I am, don't believe him.

He visited me three months ago.

Jonathan stopped breathing.

The room exploded.

"What?"

The word tore from Jonathan's throat.

Richard went pale.

Completely pale.

Jonathan read the sentence again.

Three months ago.

Richard knew exactly where Claire was.

The billionaire looked up slowly.

"Three months."

Richard said nothing.

Jonathan slammed the notebook onto the desk.

"THREE MONTHS?"

The walls seemed to shake.

Noah flinched.

The staff outside the study froze.

Nobody had heard Jonathan shout like that in years.

Richard finally cracked.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."

The confession escaped before he could stop it.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Jonathan stared.

"Explain."

Richard sank into a chair.

Suddenly looking twenty years older.

The truth emerged piece by piece.

Twenty years earlier Richard had been stealing money from Blackwell Holdings.

Millions.

Maybe more.

Claire discovered everything.

She threatened to expose him.

Richard panicked.

At first he only intended to discredit her.

Then isolate her.

Then force her away.

But one lie became another.

And another.

And another.

Until he could no longer undo the damage.

By the time he realized what he'd done...

Claire was gone.

Jonathan hated her.

And Richard had become the trusted son.

"Why didn't you fix it?"

Jonathan asked.

Richard laughed bitterly.

Because there was only one answer.

"Because every year it became harder."

Jonathan looked disgusted.

Not angry.

Disgusted.

As though he were finally seeing who Richard really was.

Then Noah asked the question nobody expected.

"Is my mom dying?"

The room went still.

Richard closed his eyes.

Because unlike everything else...

that answer wasn't a lie.

"Yes."

The word barely escaped.

Noah's face crumpled.

Jonathan's knees nearly gave out.

Richard pointed toward the black SUV outside.

"The hospital file."

His voice broke.

"She's at Saint Agnes Medical Center."

Jonathan didn't wait.

He grabbed the file.

Opened it.

Read the first page.

And felt his heart shatter.

CLAIRE BLACKWELL

Stage Four Heart Failure

Critical Condition

Noah began crying.

Not loudly.

The quiet kind.

The heartbreaking kind.

The kind children cry when they already know the truth.

Jonathan pulled him into his arms.

The boy didn't resist.

For the first time in his life...

Noah had a grandfather.

For the first time in twenty years...

Jonathan had his family back.

And he might lose it again.

One hour later, a convoy of Blackwell vehicles raced toward Saint Agnes.

The city blurred outside the windows.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody could.

Noah held the pocket watch.

Jonathan held Claire's letters.

Both terrified.

Both praying.

Both hoping they weren't already too late.

As the hospital appeared on the horizon, Noah looked toward Jonathan.

His voice trembled.

"Do you think she'll wake up?"

Jonathan looked at the photograph of Claire tucked inside the file.

The daughter he never stopped loving.

The daughter he failed to protect.

The daughter he was finally about to see again.

His answer was barely a whisper.

"She has to."

END OF PART 3

As the elevator climbed toward Claire's hospital floor, the doors suddenly opened.

A nurse stepped out.

Her face pale.

Her eyes searching.

Then she looked directly at Jonathan.

May you like

And said the words he feared most.

"Are you Claire Blackwell's father?"
