PART 2

PART 2 — The Woman Waiting In The Rain

The little boy pointed toward the church entrance.

"Outside."

For a moment Adrian couldn't move.

His heart hammered so hard he could barely hear anything else.

The guests disappeared.

The music disappeared.

Even the bride's voice faded into the background.

There was only one thought in his mind.

Elena.

After eight years.

After thousands of sleepless nights.

After hiring investigators across three states.

After checking hospitals, shelters, and missing-person records.

Could she really be here?

Adrian rose to his feet so quickly that his chair nearly toppled over.

"Stay with him," he told the nearest guest.

Then he ran.

The church doors burst open.

Cool air rushed inside.

Rain fell from a gray afternoon sky.

Guests crowded behind the windows, watching.

Adrian stepped onto the stone stairs.

His eyes searched the parking lot.

The street.

The sidewalks.

Then he saw her.

Standing beneath a large oak tree across the road.

Holding a worn umbrella.

Watching him.

Elena.

For several seconds neither moved.

It felt impossible.

Like seeing a ghost.

The woman looked older than he remembered.

Life had etched quiet hardships across her face.

Her dark hair was shorter now.

Her clothes were simple.

But her eyes were exactly the same.

The same eyes that had once looked at him as if he were the only person in the world.

A tear rolled down Elena's cheek.

The umbrella trembled in her hands.

Adrian crossed the street.

One step.

Then another.

Then faster.

Finally running.

When he reached her, he stopped only inches away.

Neither knew what to say.

Years of pain stood between them.

Years of questions.

Years of silence.

Elena spoke first.

"I'm sorry."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

His voice cracked.

"No, don't start with that."

Another tear escaped.

"Adrian—"

"Why did you leave?"

The question came out broken.

Raw.

Honest.

Elena closed her eyes.

Because she had feared this moment for years.

"I didn't want to."

Adrian stared at her.

"Then why?"

She looked toward the church.

Toward the guests.

Toward the little boy standing inside the doorway.

Then back at Adrian.

"Because your father made sure I believed I had no choice."

Adrian froze.

The world seemed to stop.

"My father?"

Elena nodded slowly.

"When I told him I was pregnant, he came to see me."

A painful memory flashed across her face.

"He said your future was already planned."

Adrian's stomach tightened.

"He told me if I stayed, your family would destroy me."

She swallowed.

"And destroy you."

Rain tapped softly against the umbrella.

"He said you would lose your inheritance."

"He said your career would be ruined."

"He said your family would never accept me."

Adrian's hands clenched into fists.

"My God..."

Elena looked away.

"I was young."

"I was scared."

"And when Danil was born..."

Her voice broke.

"I thought I was protecting you."

Adrian felt years of anger, grief, and heartbreak crashing together inside him.

"You should have told me."

"I know."

"You should have trusted me."

"I know."

"You should have let me be there."

Tears streamed down Elena's face.

"I know."

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then Adrian asked the question he feared most.

"Did you ever stop loving me?"

Elena looked directly into his eyes.

Not even for a second.

"No."

The answer came instantly.

Without hesitation.

Without doubt.

Adrian's breath caught.

Because it was exactly the answer he had secretly hoped for every day since she vanished.

At that moment the church doors opened again.

Small footsteps approached.

Danil.

The boy walked slowly toward them.

Looking confused.

Looking hopeful.

Looking scared.

He stopped between them.

His eyes moved from Adrian to Elena.

Then back again.

"Mom?"

Elena knelt beside him.

"It's okay."

Danil turned to Adrian.

"Are you really my dad?"

The question hit Adrian harder than anything else that day.

He lowered himself to one knee.

Until they were eye level.

"Yes."

Danil stared.

"Really?"

"Really."

The boy's eyes widened.

For years he had watched other children with fathers.

He had asked questions.

Wondered.

Dreamed.

And now the answer was standing right in front of him.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Danil reached out his hand.

Adrian took it.

The little boy smiled.

Then whispered the words Adrian had waited years to hear.

"I always wanted to meet you."

And for the first time since Elena disappeared...

Adrian cried openly.

Not as a businessman.

Not as a groom.

May you like

Not as a wealthy heir.

But as a father who had finally found his family.
