PART 2

PART 2 — THE CAMERAS WENT DARK FOR A REASON
The ballroom erupted into whispers.
"The cameras failed?"
"Right when the brooch disappeared?"
"That can't be a coincidence."
The security supervisor lowered his radio slowly.
"I need everyone to remain calm."
Victor let out a frustrated breath.
"Calm?"
"My family's heirloom just vanished."
He turned toward Elena again.
"And the only person standing beside the display was your daughter."
Elena's grip tightened around Sophie.
The little girl had stopped crying, but her face remained buried against her mother's shoulder.
Her tiny body trembled.
Elena gently stroked her hair.
"It's alright."
"I'm right here."
Sophie whispered through tears.
"I didn't take anything, Mommy."
"I know."
"I believe you."
Those four words were enough to make Sophie cling even tighter.
The security supervisor stepped forward carefully.
"Mrs. Harper..."
"I understand how upsetting this is."
"But until we locate the missing brooch..."
"...I need to ask everyone who was near the display to remain in the ballroom."
Elena nodded.
"We're not leaving."
"But no one searches my daughter until you have actual evidence."
The supervisor looked toward Victor.
"I agree."
Victor frowned.
"What?"
"She's a child."
"We're going to investigate this properly."
Victor clenched his jaw but said nothing.
Across the ballroom, hotel security technicians hurried into the control room.
Rows of monitors displayed every hallway, elevator, entrance, and banquet room in the hotel.
Except one.
Camera 18.
The jewelry display.
Its screen remained black.
A technician frowned.
"This isn't a hardware failure."
"What do you mean?"
He replayed the system log.
Someone had entered the network remotely.
Exactly six minutes before the welcome sign fell.
Then Camera 18 had been disabled.
Only Camera 18.
Every other camera continued recording.
The technician looked at his supervisor.
"Someone knew exactly which camera to shut off."
Back in the ballroom...
The elderly gentleman who had been watching quietly finally approached the broken wooden sign.
He knelt carefully despite his age.
Instead of looking at the shattered frame...
He examined the thick steel chain that had held it above the entrance.
His fingers touched the broken metal.
Then his expression changed.
"This wasn't an accident."
The nearby guests stared at him.
"What do you mean?"
He held up the chain.
The metal had been cut cleanly.
Not snapped.
Not broken by age.
Cut.
Someone had weakened it beforehand.
The security supervisor walked over immediately.
"You think someone sabotaged it?"
The old man nodded.
"I'm a retired structural engineer."
"I spent forty years investigating construction failures."
"This chain didn't fail."
"Someone made sure it would."
Silence spread through the ballroom once again.
Elena slowly turned toward Victor.
"You see?"
"This didn't begin with my daughter."
"It began before anyone noticed."
Victor looked uncertain for the first time.
Just then, another security guard hurried inside carrying a small velvet pouch.
"We found this."
Everyone looked up.
"It was under one of the reception tables."
Victor immediately recognized it.
"The Langston pouch."
He opened it.
Empty.
The emerald brooch wasn't inside.
Only a single pearl.
Sophie suddenly looked up.
"My dress..."
Everyone turned toward her.
She hesitated.
"The pearls..."
"They look like mine."
Elena looked closer.
One tiny pearl was missing from the shoulder of Sophie's dress.
The pearl inside the pouch matched it perfectly.
Victor's face hardened again.
"There."
"That's your proof."
Elena shook her head.
"No."
"It proves she was near the pouch."
"Not that she stole anything."
The elderly engineer spoke quietly.
"Or..."
"...someone wanted us to believe she did."
Meanwhile...
Inside the hotel's security office...
A young technician froze.
"Wait."
"What?"
"I still have hallway footage."
"The display camera was disabled..."
"...but Camera 21 overlooks the ballroom entrance."
He quickly rewound the recording.
Guests appeared one after another.
Servers carried trays.
Photographers adjusted their lenses.
Then...
The technician leaned closer to the screen.
"Pause."
A hotel employee wearing a maintenance uniform pushed a supply cart through the hallway.
Nothing unusual.
Except...
He wasn't on the maintenance schedule.
The technician opened the employee roster.
No matching name.
No matching badge number.
He looked back at the video.
The man briefly disappeared behind a marble column.
When he emerged...
The supply cart was gone.
Yet only seconds later, the welcome sign crashed into the ballroom.
The technician immediately grabbed his radio.
"Supervisor."
"I think someone entered the building pretending to be hotel staff."
The ballroom doors opened.
The technician hurried inside carrying a tablet.
"I found something."
He handed it to the security supervisor.
The room gathered around.
Victor.
Elena.
The wedding planner.
The older guests.
Everyone watched the recording.
There was no footage of the brooch.
But there was clear footage of the fake maintenance worker entering the restricted service corridor moments before the sign fell.
Victor frowned.
"I've never seen him before."
The wedding planner shook her head.
"He doesn't work for us."
The security supervisor looked up.
"Find every employee."
"Lock down the service areas."
"No one leaves this hotel."
Security officers scattered immediately.
For the first time...
The investigation had shifted away from Elena and Sophie.
Victor slowly looked toward the frightened little girl.
She still rested quietly in her mother's arms.
The accusation he had shouted before hundreds of guests echoed in his own mind.
"She stole from me."
Now...
He wasn't nearly as certain.
A few minutes later, one of the security officers ran back into the ballroom.
His breathing was heavy.
"We searched the maintenance hallway."
"And?"
"We found the abandoned cart."
Victor stepped forward.
"Was the brooch inside?"
The officer slowly shook his head.
"No."
"But we found something much stranger."
He placed a folded blueprint on the nearest table.
It was an architectural map of the hotel.
Every security camera had been marked with red circles.
Every blind spot had been highlighted.
And one location near the ballroom stage had been outlined in black ink.
Across the top, someone had written four chilling words.
"Phase One Complete."
A heavy silence filled the room.
The missing brooch...
The sabotaged sign...
The disabled camera...
None of it had been random.
Someone had planned every second.
And whoever was behind it...
May you like
Was almost certainly still inside the ballroom.
To be continued...
