PART 3

PART 3 — THE SECRET THOMAS PROTECTED
The courtroom had never been this quiet.
No lawyer spoke.
No reporter reached for another question.
Even the jurors seemed afraid to breathe.
Judge Amelia Grant slowly folded her hands.
She looked at Lily.
Then at Rebecca.
Finally, she turned toward FBI Special Agent Collins.
"Agent Collins..."
"I believe this court needs answers."
The agent nodded.
"I agree, Your Honor."
He picked up the leather journal Thomas Collins had left behind.
"The journal contains entries written over the last eight years."
He carefully opened to a bookmarked page.
"The first entry explains why Thomas adopted Lily."
Lily looked confused.
"I thought Daddy just... chose me."
Agent Collins smiled gently.
"He did."
"But not for the reason everyone believed."
He began reading.
"Today I met a little girl who had already lost everything. If I don't bring her home, someone else will."
The room remained silent.
Thomas's words continued.
"Her mother asked me to promise one thing... protect Lily, no matter what it costs."
Grace slowly closed her eyes.
She remembered Thomas saying those exact words years earlier.
She had never understood them.
Until now.
Rebecca suddenly stood.
"None of this has anything to do with this trial."
Judge Grant looked at her.
"It may have everything to do with this trial."
Rebecca's jaw tightened.
"This is becoming a circus."
"No."
Judge Grant replied calmly.
"It is becoming the truth."
Agent Collins opened another page.
"Three years later..."
Thomas had written:
"Rebecca keeps asking about Lily's adoption records."
"She doesn't know the documents were moved."
"If she ever finds them..."
"...Lily will never be safe."
The courtroom shifted uneasily.
Daniel looked toward Rebecca.
For the first time that day...
Even he seemed unsure.
The FBI agent placed the journal down.
"There is something else."
He held up the flash drive.
"Our forensic team managed to decrypt part of the files while traveling here."
A monitor was rolled into the courtroom.
Folders appeared on the screen.
Bank records.
Property transfers.
Corporate agreements.
Then...
One folder labeled:
PRIVATE DNA REPORT
Agent Collins opened it.
Inside were laboratory documents.
Judge Grant adjusted her glasses.
"Read the conclusion."
The agent took a slow breath.
"The report confirms..."
"...that Thomas Collins was not Lily's biological father."
No one reacted.
They already knew she had been adopted.
Then he continued.
"But..."
"...Rebecca Hayes is Lily's biological aunt."
Every head snapped toward Rebecca.
Lily blinked.
"My aunt?"
Rebecca's face lost all color.
The prosecutor whispered,
"My God..."
Judge Grant leaned forward.
"Explain."
Agent Collins opened another document.
"Twenty-one years ago..."
"Rebecca's younger sister, Anna Hayes, disappeared after reporting financial crimes involving several executives connected to Collins Development."
Grace frowned.
"The same investigation Thomas mentioned?"
"Yes."
He nodded.
"Anna gave birth to Lily shortly before disappearing."
The room became still.
"Before she vanished..."
"...Anna asked Thomas Collins to protect her daughter if anything ever happened."
Lily stared blankly.
"My mommy?"
Agent Collins looked at her with compassion.
"Your birth mother loved you very much."
"She believed Thomas was the only person she could trust."
Lily slowly looked down at the floor.
Rebecca suddenly slammed her hands onto the defense table.
"That's enough!"
Her voice echoed through the courtroom.
"I want my attorney."
Judge Grant's eyes narrowed.
"You haven't been charged."
"Yet."
Rebecca realized her mistake.
She had spoken as though she already expected to be arrested.
Several jurors exchanged uneasy glances.
Grace's attorney quietly stood.
"Your Honor..."
"I believe we now understand motive."
He walked toward the evidence table.
"If Thomas refused to surrender Lily's adoption records..."
"...and if those records were connected to financial crimes..."
"...then his death was never about business."
He looked directly at Rebecca.
"It was about keeping one child silent."
Lily instinctively reached for Grace's hand.
Grace knelt beside her.
"I'm here."
The little girl hugged her tightly.
For the first time since entering the courtroom...
She looked like an eight-year-old child instead of the key witness in a murder trial.
Just then...
One of the forensic analysts rushed into the courtroom carrying a laptop.
"Agent Collins."
"We recovered deleted security footage."
The courtroom stirred again.
"What footage?"
"The Collins residence."
"The night Thomas died."
Rebecca slowly closed her eyes.
The analyst connected the laptop.
A grainy security video appeared.
Time stamp:
10:41 PM
Thomas entered his study.
Moments later...
Rebecca entered.
Daniel followed thirty seconds behind.
The video had no audio.
But the images were unmistakable.
Thomas pointed toward the door.
Rebecca refused to leave.
Daniel locked the study door from inside.
The courtroom watched in stunned silence.
Then...
The footage froze.
The analyst swallowed.
"The remaining two minutes were intentionally deleted."
Judge Grant frowned.
"Can they be recovered?"
The analyst nodded slowly.
"Partially."
He pressed another key.
The damaged footage resumed.
Distorted.
Fragmented.
But one frame remained perfectly clear.
Thomas reached beneath his desk...
...and handed something to Grace.
Not Rebecca.
Not Daniel.
Grace.
The image froze again.
The courtroom looked toward her.
Grace covered her mouth.
"I..."
Her voice shook.
"I remember now."
Everyone stared.
Thomas hadn't handed her poison.
He had handed her...
"A key."
She looked at Agent Collins.
"The safety deposit box key."
Tears streamed down her face.
"He told me..."
"...'If anything happens to me, trust no one until Lily is safe.'"
The courtroom fell silent once more.
Judge Grant looked at Grace.
"Why didn't you tell the police?"
Grace's shoulders trembled.
"I forgot."
"I hit my head that night when someone pushed me."
"The doctors said the trauma caused temporary memory loss."
Agent Collins slowly nodded.
"Her medical records confirm that."
Everything the prosecution believed...
Everything the jury believed...
Was beginning to collapse.
Then the courtroom doors opened again.
A U.S. Marshal stepped inside carrying a sealed evidence bag.
He handed it directly to Agent Collins.
The agent looked inside.
His expression changed immediately.
Judge Grant noticed.
"What is it?"
The agent answered quietly.
"We found Anna Hayes."
The courtroom gasped.
Agent Collins looked at Lily.
"Your mother..."
He paused.
May you like
"...is alive."
To be continued...
