PART 2

PART 2 — THE MEN IN THE BLACK SUV

The black SUV rolled to a stop across the street.

Its engine idled quietly.

The windows were tinted so dark that no one could see inside.

Emily looked toward the front window.

"What is that?"

Mark didn't answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the vehicle.

Every muscle in his body seemed tense.

The calm, emotionless man from moments earlier was gone.

Rachel saw it too.

Despite the pain, she forced herself to stay conscious.

"Lock... the door..."

Her voice was barely audible.

Emily frowned.

"What?"

"The front door..."

"Lock it..."

Before Emily could move, two men stepped out of the SUV.

They wore dark suits.

No uniforms.

No badges.

No obvious identification.

One of them glanced toward the house.

Then quietly spoke into an earpiece.

Mark finally moved.

He walked to the front door.

Locked it.

Then checked the back door leading to the patio.

Every movement was deliberate.

Not rushed.

Not panicked.

Prepared.

Emily stared at him.

"You knew they were coming."

Mark looked at her for the first time.

"I hoped I was wrong."

"What is happening?"

"I'll explain later."

"No."

"You'll explain now."

Another vehicle pulled onto the street.

This time it was an ambulance.

Its siren faded as it stopped in front of the house.

Behind it came a police cruiser.

Emily sighed with relief.

"Thank goodness."

She hurried toward the front door.

Mark stepped in front of her.

"Don't open it yet."

She stared at him.

"Have you completely lost your mind?"

"My wife needs medical help."

"I know."

"Then move!"

Mark remained where he was.

"I need to see who gets out first."

Emily's anger exploded.

"My sister is lying on the kitchen floor!"

"And you're worried about who's outside?"

Rachel opened her eyes again.

"Emily..."

Emily knelt beside her.

"It's okay."

"The ambulance is here."

Rachel slowly shook her head.

"No..."

Then she looked directly at Mark.

For only a second.

He understood.

He walked carefully to the front window and pulled the curtain aside just enough to look outside.

Two paramedics climbed out of the ambulance.

A police officer followed.

Behind them...

The two men from the black SUV remained standing near the sidewalk.

Watching.

Not approaching.

Just watching.

Mark finally unlocked the front door.

"Now."

The paramedics rushed inside carrying their equipment.

One immediately knelt beside Rachel.

"Ma'am, can you tell me your name?"

"Rachel..."

"Good."

"Stay with us."

The second paramedic began checking her pulse while preparing an IV.

Emily stepped back to give them room.

A police officer entered behind them.

"I'm Officer Daniels."

"We received a medical emergency call."

He looked around the room.

His eyes briefly settled on the broken bowl scattered across the kitchen floor.

Then on Mark.

"Sir, are you her husband?"

"Yes."

"Were you here when this happened?"

"I was."

Officer Daniels nodded.

"We'll need a statement after she's stabilized."

Before Mark could respond, one of the paramedics looked up.

"We need to transport her immediately."

Rachel reached weakly toward Ethan.

The little boy rushed to her side.

"I'm here, Mommy."

Rachel gently touched his cheek.

"You were... very brave."

Tears rolled down Ethan's face.

"Are you coming back?"

Rachel forced a smile.

"I always keep my promises."

The paramedics carefully lifted her onto the stretcher.

As they wheeled her toward the front door, Rachel suddenly grabbed Mark's sleeve.

The paramedics stopped.

She whispered something so quietly that no one else could hear.

Mark leaned closer.

His expression changed.

He nodded once.

"I will."

Rachel released his hand.

The stretcher disappeared through the doorway.

Ethan tried to follow.

Mark gently caught his shoulder.

"We'll meet her there."

The ambulance doors closed.

Seconds later, it drove away.

Officer Daniels remained behind.

"So..."

He opened his notebook.

"Let's talk."

Before the conversation could begin, a knock sounded at the still-open front door.

Not from a police officer.

Not from a paramedic.

One of the men in the dark suit stood outside.

His hands remained visible.

His expression was calm.

"Mr. Bennett?"

Mark stepped outside and quietly closed the door behind him.

Officer Daniels watched through the window.

Emily did the same.

The suited man handed Mark a sealed envelope.

No words.

Just the envelope.

Mark opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

His face instantly lost all color.

"What is it?" Emily whispered from inside the house.

Officer Daniels couldn't see the photograph clearly.

But he saw Mark's reaction.

For the first time...

The composed husband looked genuinely frightened.

The suited man finally spoke.

"You have one hour."

Then he walked back to the SUV.

The vehicle pulled away without another word.

Officer Daniels stepped outside immediately.

"Sir."

"Who was that?"

Mark slowly folded the photograph.

"I don't know."

Officer Daniels looked unconvinced.

"You seemed to."

Mark stared down the empty street.

"I wish I didn't."

Inside the house, Ethan quietly walked over to the kitchen table.

There, beside Rachel's coffee mug, lay an old white envelope.

It had been hidden beneath a cookbook.

Across the front, in Rachel's handwriting, were six simple words:

For Ethan—Only If I'm Gone.

The little boy picked it up with trembling hands.

He looked toward the front door where his father still stood.

Then back at the envelope.

He had no idea...

May you like

...that opening it would reveal a family secret buried for more than twenty years.

To be continued...
