The Uniformed Witness: Justice Behind the Glass

I. The Meeting Behind the Glass
In the prison visitation room, the air was heavy and smelled of disinfectant. Adrian, a 30-year-old man with tired eyes, pressed his hand against the cold glass that separated him from the outside world. On the other side, his wife held their two little twin boys.

“I brought your children, Adrian. I didn’t want another day to pass without them seeing their father,” she said, her voice breaking.

Adrian began to cry silently, caressing the glass as if he could touch the babies’ skin. “Thank you, my love… forgive me for not being there,” he said.

At that moment, a police officer named Sergeant Bennett approached Adrian. He took him firmly by the arm, but not roughly.

“Come with me, inmate,” Bennett said. To Adrian’s surprise, the officer did not take him back to his cell. Instead, he led him around the room and opened the security door to the visitation area. “Go to your family. You have ten minutes to hold your children without glass between you.”

II. A Promise of Freedom
Adrian, in shock, embraced his children while Sergeant Bennett watched from a respectful distance.

“Why are you doing this, officer?” Adrian asked, wiping away his tears. “No one here shows that kind of kindness.”

“Because besides being a police officer, I’m also a lawyer,” Bennett replied in a firm voice. “And I’m going to help get you out of here. I know you’re innocent because I’m a father too, and I know how to recognize a man who only wants to work.”
