The Silence of the Ripper: A Lesson in Steel

I. The Attack in the Dining Hall
In the dining hall of the maximum-security women’s prison, the clatter of metal trays was constant. Mrs. Eleanor, a 70-year-old woman with knotted hands and a calm gaze, ate her portion of rice and vegetables with an almost zen-like peace. She had decided that her years of violence were behind her; now she only sought silence.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over her table. “Roxie,” a young, heavily built inmate with long braids reaching her waist and tattoos climbing up her neck, slammed Eleanor’s tray.

—“You’ve eaten enough for today, old woman,” Roxie said with a cruel smile. She grabbed the tray and threw it to the floor, scattering the food across the gray concrete. “If you’re hungry, eat off the ground. That’s where useless old women belong.” With a shove, she knocked Eleanor out of her chair.
