The Night I Heard My Husband Say He Was Pretending

She woke up because of whispers.
Not loud voices.
Not an argument.
Just two voices behind the bedroom door… at midnight.
Barefoot in the dark hallway, she held the doorframe and looked through the small opening.
Her husband sat on the edge of the bed.
Beside him was his silver-haired mother.
Too close.
Too serious.
The bedside lamp made their faces look guilty.
Then he whispered,
“I can’t do this anymore, Mom…”
Her heart stopped.
“I don’t know how long I can keep pretending.”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
His mother grabbed his arm and hissed,
“Lower your voice. You’ll wake her.”
The young woman covered her mouth, shaking.
Pretending?
Pretending what?
That he loved her?
That their marriage was real?
Then her husband looked at the door, eyes full of pain.
“Maybe it’s time she wakes up.”
The floor creaked under her foot.
His mother turned.
The door slowly opened.
Part 2: The young woman stood there, trembling.

The young woman stood there, trembling.
Her husband rose from the bed, pale.
She whispered,
“What were you pretending?”
His mother stepped forward fast.
“Go back to bed.”
But he stopped her.
“No, Mom. She deserves the truth.”
The young woman’s lips shook.
“What truth?”
He looked at her like he was about to lose everything.
Then he opened the bedside drawer and pulled out a small hospital bracelet.
Her name was on it.
The date was from three years ago.
She stared at it, confused and terrified.
He whispered,
“You didn’t just survive the accident…”
His mother’s eyes filled with fear.
“Don’t say it.”

He looked at his wife and broke.
“You forgot the baby.”
