The Millionaire Comes Home Early… and Almost Collapses from What He Sees

Richard Bennett had never felt as lost as he had in recent months. The successful businessman who ran one of the largest construction companies in New York discovered that all his money meant nothing when it came to healing the broken heart of a three-year-old girl.

That was when he decided to leave early from a meeting with Japanese investors. Something inside him was pulling him home—an unexplainable feeling he couldn’t shake. When he opened the kitchen door of his mansion in Upper East Side, Richard had to hold onto the doorframe to keep from collapsing.

His daughter Lily was sitting on the housemaid’s shoulders, both of them singing a children’s song while washing dishes together. The little girl was laughing in a way he hadn’t seen in months.

“Now scrub right down here, princess,” said Maria, the maid, guiding the child’s tiny hands. “You’re such a smart girl.”

“Auntie Maria, can I make bubbles with the soap?” Lily asked in a crystal-clear voice Richard thought he had lost forever.

The businessman felt his legs tremble. Ever since Emily, his wife, had died in a car accident, Lily hadn’t spoken a single word. The best child psychologists in the country had told him it was normal—that the child needed time to process the loss.
