“Good,” she said finally.

“You're not angry?”

She glanced toward the water.

Richard nodded.
“That seems fair.”
They walked back toward the reception.
Near the terrace, Natalie approached Emily.
“Ms. Carter?”
Emily turned.
“Yes?”
Natalie held a small envelope.
“I wanted to give you something.”
Emily accepted it.
Inside was a handwritten card.
She opened it.
The message was simple.
“Thank you for showing me that my voice matters.”
Emily read the words twice.
Then looked up.
Natalie's eyes were bright.
“I almost quit the catering job after that wedding,” she admitted.
Emily listened.
“But then things changed. And I realized I didn't have to be ashamed of working here.”
Her voice trembled.
“Now I'm almost finished with nursing school.”
Emily smiled warmly.
“That's wonderful.”
Natalie laughed through her tears.
“I still get nervous sometimes.”
“So do I.”
The young woman looked surprised.
“You do?”
Emily nodded.
“Of course.”
Natalie smiled.
Then she asked:
“Can I tell you something?”
“Anything.”
“That night, when Madison pushed you into the pool, I thought she had ruined your life.”
Emily waited.
Natalie continued:
“But now I think she revealed something about yours.”
Emily looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Natalie smiled.
“She thought a uniform made you someone she could treat however she wanted.”
She paused.
“But you never believed that.”
Emily felt her throat tighten.
“No,” she said softly.
“I never did.”
Several weeks later, Emily took her mother to lunch at a small neighborhood restaurant.
Nothing extravagant.
Just a comfortable place with wooden tables and sunlight streaming through the windows.
Sarah ordered soup.
Emily chose a sandwich.
Their waitress was a young woman named Grace.
She looked tired.
But she smiled while taking their order.
When the food arrived, Sarah thanked her warmly.

After the waitress left, Sarah looked at her daughter.
“You know what I love about this place?”
Emily smiled.
“The soup?”
Her mother laughed.
“That too.”
Then she nodded toward the dining room.
“People are kind here.”

A dishwasher stepped out of the kitchen, and a colleague offered him a glass of water.
