A Mother’s Oath

Part 1: The Shadow on Her Face

The silence of the afternoon was broken by the metallic sound of a key turning in the lock. Mrs. Margaret Hayes, a woman with white hair and a serene gaze, entered the living room carrying a bag of fresh bread, expecting to find the usual peace. However, when she turned on the light, she discovered her daughter-in-law, Emily, sitting in a corner of the kitchen, trying to hide her face in her hands. The mother-in-law arrived at her son’s house and saw her daughter-in-law beaten, with a deep bruise darkening her left cheekbone and a split lip.

Emily, once discovered, could no longer maintain the façade of normality and broke into bitter sobs that came from the depths of her fear.
“Mother… I can’t take it anymore. Your son comes home drunk every night and beats me,” she confessed in a broken voice, revealing the nightmare she lived behind the walls of that home that had become her prison.

The elderly woman dropped the bags, feeling a sharp cold in her chest at the damage caused by her own blood. She said:
“My child, why didn’t you tell me sooner? Just look at what he’s done to you,” she said, approaching to gently caress the young woman’s wounded face with trembling hands.

Part 2: The Weight of Silence

Emily shrugged, glancing toward the door with the terror of someone expecting her executioner to appear at any moment. The control her husband had over her was built on fear and isolation.

“He said if I told anyone, it would be even worse for me,” she admitted, revealing that death threats had been the lock that kept her mouth shut through months of constant abuse. The woman collapsed hard onto the floor (in her memory, reliving the last beating where he had knocked her down mercilessly as she begged for her life).

Despite her age, Mrs. Hayes felt a renewed strength fueled by indignation. She would not allow the silence that had marked her generation to repeat itself before her eyes—least of all at the hands of the son she had raised.

“Don’t worry, I will handle this,” she declared with a firmness that left Emily stunned.

The mother would not cover up her son’s sin—she would be the hammer of justice.

Part 3: The Arrogance of the Abuser

Near midnight, the door burst open violently. Daniel Hayes stumbled in, his breath thick with alcohol and his gaze unfocused. When he saw his mother sitting in the living room, waiting with the lights on, he tried to compose himself—but the confrontation was immediate.

“How could you be capable of hitting your wife?” she demanded, her words sharp like a poisoned dart.

Far from showing remorse, the man poured himself a glass of water with chilling arrogance. He said she deserved it because she did nothing right, justifying his cowardice with the excuse of a man who believes he owns another life.

Mrs. Hayes stood up, facing him despite their difference in height. She told him that no woman deserves to be beaten, and he replied that she did, revealing the rot in his soul.

Tired of the reprimand, Daniel tried to end the situation with an empty promise.
“Come on, Mom, don’t make a big deal out of this. It’ll be the last time,” he said with a cynical smile as he walked toward his room.

“You’re right,” she replied coldly. “It will be the last time.”

He did not understand the double meaning of her words.

Part 4: The Fall of the Coward

Daniel fell into a deep sleep, trusting that his mother, being his mother, would keep the secret as families used to do.

What he did not know was that his mother would call the police and turn him in, without a tremor in her hand as she dialed the emergency number.

While her son snored, Mrs. Hayes guided the officers to the bedroom, handing them the photographs she had taken of Emily’s injuries just minutes earlier. The man fell hard to the ground (this time it was Daniel, pulled from the bed by the officers and thrown to the floor to be handcuffed).
